A new study from the UK's Royal College of General Practitioners reveals that men who took the erectile dysfunction medication Levitra (Vardenafil) to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) experienced an average 10% lower risk of death compared with those who did not take the medication.
The study, published online Friday, found that the medication, which is sold under the brand name Levitra, was associated with a 10% reduced risk of dying from cardiovascular death, according to the study.
In the UK, about one in five men are prescribed Vardenafil, which is prescribed only by a doctor, the study found.
"While the findings are encouraging, it is important to highlight the importance of careful patient monitoring during treatment. If you have an underlying condition, such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes, you should seek medical attention," said Professor Peter McNamara, lead author of the study.
A total of 8.3 million men aged between 40 and 70 were prescribed Vardenafil in 2013, with men being overmedicated and those overdiagnosed. Of the 7.1 million men treated by the National Health Service (NHS), the total number of prescriptions for ED in 2013 was 8,853. The study's authors say the results are a reminder of the importance of a comprehensive medical history and physical examination to determine the cause of ED.
In addition to the study, the National Library of Medicine has published a similar study on Vardenafil. The study showed that patients who had taken the medication before had an average 10% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular death, compared with those who did not take the medication.
"Although the risk of cardiovascular death is still very low, its important to note that Vardenafil is associated with an increased risk of death in patients already using the ED treatment," said Dr Tom Pinder, senior director of the National Health Service, the study's authors claim.
"This study reinforces the need for careful and high-quality patient care when treating men who have taken the drug, particularly those with pre-existing conditions, and who are at high risk of cardiovascular death."
In addition to the findings from the study, Dr Pinder said: "These findings highlight the need for careful patient monitoring and adherence to treatment, and a careful assessment of the risk of cardiovascular death for men prescribed this medicine to treat erectile dysfunction.
"The findings add to the growing body of evidence showing that the use of medication for erectile dysfunction can be harmful to the patient's cardiovascular health and may increase the risk of death."
The research, published online Friday, follows a review of the UK's National Health Service, which includes the National Institutes of Health, and a review of its guidelines for treating erectile dysfunction.
A further study published in the journal, "Clinical Practice and Research on Sexual Medicine," found that among men who took the medication before the onset of ED, "the mean cardiovascular death rate among them was 22% lower than that among men taking the ED drug."
Dr Pinder and his team were funded by the National Health Service.
The findings were published online Thursday by The University of Manchester's Medical School.
